Let me know if this scenario sounds familiar: You crave Asian cuisine, so you order PF Chang’s lettuce wraps as your main course. Right after scarfing down the entire order, you give yourself a big pat on the back since you stuck to a low carb diet while dining out. After all, you can’t get much lower in carbs than lettuce wraps, right?
The chicken is grilled and the wraps are made from a lettuce leaf – so you count this as another big win towards reaching your keto weight loss goals.
After licking every last bit of that savory sauce from the plate, you decide to pull out your macro app to add your healthy chicken lettuce wraps. But wait – that can’t be right. Your macro app says the Asian food you just devoured has a whopping 66 grams of carbs! How the 🤬 can lettuce leaves with a chicken filling add up to 66 carbs?!?!
Unfortunately this scenario isn’t rare, and P.F. Chang isn’t the only restaurant out there screwing up your low carb plan!
The good news is you can make a healthy lettuce wrap at home with simple ingredients that fit right into your keto diet.

Chicken Lettuce Wraps Recipe Ingredients
Let’s chat about everything you need to throw together low carb Asian lettuce wraps that quench your cravings for PF Changs – but without all of the unnecessary carbs.
Lettuce Wrap Ingredient List:
The main ingredients for this copycat PF Chang’s lettuce wrap recipe include chicken, shiitake mushrooms, water chestnuts, green onions, and butter lettuce. To spice the main dish, you’ll need dried minced onion, salt, and pepper.
To whip up the sauce, you’ll need coconut aminos, almond butter, minced garlic, ground ginger, sesame oil and rice vinegar.
You’ll also need a few tablespoons of coconut oil to fry the diced chicken.
When it comes to oils for frying keto meals, don’t swap coconut oil with canola oil if that’s all you have in your pantry. In fact, if you’ve got canola oil anywhere in your kitchen – throw it away immediately. That stuff is keeping you inflamed, no matter what the American Heart Association has to say about highly processed vegetable oils.
Except when it comes to highly processed vegetable oils, we do 🧐
Chicken:
For the chicken, choose either ground chicken or diced chicken breasts. I typically go with the latter since that’s what I have on hand – but either option works well with this recipe. I suppose you could even get away with ground turkey if that’s your meat preference.
Vegetables:
This recipe doesn’t require too many vegetables. The basic recipe calls for green onions, shiitake mushrooms, and water chestnuts.
Of course, you’ll also need lettuce wraps since this is a lettuce wrap recipe. The best kind of lettuce for this recipe is butter lettuce leaves since they’re so easy to break apart. In fact, they’re so convenient that I’ve even almost forgotten about that time I found a spider living in my head of butter lettuce leaves.
Yes that’s a true story … but they’re sold as living butter lettuce heads, so what else can you expect but to find a creepy crawly every now and then? If the chance of finding small spiders creeps you out, you can also use romaine lettuce, or even plain iceberg lettuce.
Chicken Lettuce Wrap Sauce Ingredients:
The reason this seemingly innocent appetizer contains so many carbs in the PF Chang’s version is because of the sauce. That’s the case for many restaurant options since most sauces are loaded with sugar, or use ingredients that are loaded with sugar.
Let’s talk about the homemade version, that’s also low in carbs, so you can enjoy this meal at home.
The main ingredients that make up the sauce include coconut aminos, sesame oil, and rice vinegar.
When used in a large amount, the carbs in coconut aminos can add up. Since you’re only using a few tablespoons for the entire recipe, most keto dieters can get away with keeping coconut aminos in this recipe.
To complete the sauce, I use ground ginger ginger and minced garlic. I suppose you could grate fresh ginger and chop a fresh garlic clove – but I like to keep recipes simple. This means I stick with the simple pre-made versions.
I also add a little bit of almond butter to give the sauce a touch of sweetness. While this may sound strange, it’s a secret ingredient I use in a few recipes, and it works well.
If you prefer a kick to your Asian chicken lettuce wraps, stir in a little chili paste or red pepper flakes.
How to Make PF Chang’s Copycat Chicken Lettuce Wraps
Start by adding all of the sauce ingredients into a small bowl, and then combine well. If you didn’t meal prep ahead of time, dice the mushrooms, green onions, and water chestnuts. Then cut the chicken into small pieces. Set all of these ingredients aside.
Psst … here’s a great tip when it comes to dicing chicken: add the thawed chicken back into the freezer for 10-15 minutes prior to dicing. Slightly frozen chicken is much easier to slice than chicken straight from the fridge.
Next, heat the coconut oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet.
Once the oil is very hot, add the diced chicken. Allow the chicken to cook until lightly browned. This should take approximately five minutes. Stir while cooking in order to brown both sides of the meat. Then, season the chicken with salt, pepper and minced onions as it browns.
After a few minutes, add the diced vegetables into the cooked chicken. Saute everything together over medium heat for a few minutes. Then pour the sauce over the chicken mixture and combine well.
Once combined, remove from the heat and serve on top of lettuce wraps.
The Chicken Lettuce Wraps Wrap Up
This easy keto meal works well as a main dish or even a great appetizer.
Even though there are plenty of delicious sides you can add to these chicken lettuce cups, my whole family devours this recipe as an all-in-one meal.
If your family prefers sides that combine well with the Asian flavors in this meal, some great ideas include coconut cauliflower fried rice or cilantro lime rice.
The best part about easy keto meals like this is you can double the batch and save leftovers for lunch the next day. Store leftover chicken in an airtight container and then reheat on the stovetop. Serve with fresh lettuce wraps.
Do your best to skip reheating the chicken in the microwave since it kills the taste of my favorite recipes. Plus microwaves aren’t the best option when it comes to improving your health.
