Keto Friendly Hot Chocolate Ingredients
The good news is you only need 4 simple ingredients to make a cup of rich hot chocolate: heavy whipping cream, water, dark chocolate, and collagen protein.
You may have noticed I don’t list any low-carb sweetener for this hot chocolate keto recipe. More on that in a minute.
When it comes to the ingredients for this delicious cup of hot chocolate, always choose the highest quality ingredients possible. This means search for organic heavy cream and grass-fed collagen protein.
My favorite collagen protein is Great Lakes Collagen in the green can. While you can find it on Amazon, I order it from Thrive Market since you save up to $5 per can. I slip this stuff into my kids low sugar juice to keep them healthy all year round – so we go through a lot of this stuff!
When it comes to dark chocolate, I prefer Lindt 90% or above since European chocolates have less mold. Some of my other favorite high quality brands include Theo’s and Endangered Species. I steer clear of brands like Lily’s because I don’t enjoy sugar alcohols found in these brands, including the side effects they often come with.
A Word About Keto Friendly Sweeteners
I made the personal choice a few years ago to ditch added keto-friendly sweetener in keto recipes whenever possible. While I did lose more than 100 pounds keeping sweeteners in my plan, I also found cravings for regular sugar came back with too many sweetened foods. I also noticed the weight I worked so hard to lose started coming back too.
Instead of using unsweetened cocoa powder mixed with my favorite sweetener for this keto version of hot chocolate, I began melting down dark chocolate. While dark chocolate does contain small amounts of added sugar, your body understands how to process the real thing better than chemicals made in a science lab.
If you’re overly sensitive to even small amounts of sugar, or you just prefer keto sweeteners like monk fruit sweetener, get this free keto sweetener guide. It will show you the best low carb sweetener options, as well as how to convert them for different keto recipes.
Keep in mind, the less low carb sweeteners you use in keto friendly recipes, the more your taste buds will shift to prefer the real foods you should include in a keto diet. We teach Keto Decoded members how to wean off of keto sweeteners slowly. Several members have gone on to lose up to 80 pounds in less than a year after no other diet plan has worked for them, so I’d say we’re onto something.
How to Make Creamy Keto Hot Chocolate
You can make this recipe in two easy steps.
Start by adding all of the ingredients into a small saucepan. Heat on medium heat until the hot chocolate is warm. This should take around 5 minutes. Stir the hot chocolate ingredients together with a whisk as the chocolate melts and the liquids heat up.
Once you warm the hot chocolate to your preferred temperature, pour it into a jar or mug. Use a hand frother to froth up your hot cup of cocoa. Alternatively, you can use an immersion blender to add more froth to the keto cocoa.
Top your hot chocolate with a pinch of salt to really bring out the delicious chocolate flavor.
More Hot Chocolate Drink Recipes
What if you want a dairy free option? You can substitute the heavy cream for either full fat coconut milk or unsweetened almond milk. If you choose these options, you’ll want to use less water.
When replacing the heavy cream with almond milk, use 8 full ounces of almond milk and skip the water completely. If you decide to skip the combination of heavy cream and water for full fat coconut milk, it’s up to you if you want to add water to this version or only use the full-fat coconut milk as your base.
To turn this drink into a salted caramel hot chocolate drink, replace one ounce of heavy cream with a tablespoon of butter. You can also add a dash of vanilla extract to give this drink even more flavor. This is the best hot chocolate I’ve tried!
The Keto Hot Chocolate Wrap Up
Creamy keto hot chocolate makes for a comforting drink for the winter season, or can even be used as a quick and easy keto breakfast year round. I love drinking this hot chocolate recipe with an almond butter cookie or chocolate pecan ball when I’m in the mood for cookies for breakfast.
Skip fast food breakfasts from the drive thru and take a cup of delicious keto cocoa to go instead! You’ll skip the additional cost associated with low quality food … and have better health benefits that come with making your own low carb meal at home.
