Want to learn how to crush through one of the biggest obstacles that stand in the way of most struggling keto dieters?
Let’s talk about how to crush through cravings on keto. If you struggle with cravings while trying hard to stick to keto, learn what we teach Keto Decoded Members in pillar 3 of our Ready, Set, Keto! Method.
Crushing through Cravings on Keto the Right Way
Crushing through cravings the right way at the beginning of your keto plan is incredibly important. Most people try to white-knuckle their way through cravings. When you do that, you end up giving in to cravings. This will sabotage much of the progress you made with just one slip-up.
If you struggle with yo-yo-ing weight like I did, then you know that you never stop with just one slip-up.
Once that cheating ball gets rolling, one small bite leads to one small handful. This leads to a second handful. Before you know it, one tiny slip up throws you out of ketosis.
Since you’re still working on becoming fat-adapted, who knows how long you’ll have to struggle to get back into ketosis.
I know you want results on keto. If white-knuckling your way through cravings actually worked, wouldn’t we all be at our goals by now? I did my best to white-knuckle my way through cravings for decades. That only led to more struggle and more diet misery.
Learn how to work smarter – not harder.
You can keep applying the same strategy. You can try your hardest to let these cravings pass. Since many of these cravings are physiological – even the most willpower you can muster up doesn’t stand a chance against them.
Unless you learn how to work smarter and not harder. Let’s get to three ways you can crush cravings like our members.
Crush Through Keto Cravings Tactic #1 – Improve Digestion
The first way you can begin to crush cravings is by improving digestion. While improving impaired digestion is important on any plan, it’s especially important if when your goal is to stick to a long-term keto plan.
No one goes into keto saying, “Wow, I can’t wait to cut back on all of these delicious carbs!”
Especially when up until this point, you’ve been taught that you should eat between 50-60% of your total calories from carbs. Carbs are delicious and they’re addictive. This is especially true with the processed carbs you used to fuel yourself prior to finding keto.
But if your dieting past resembles mine, then your digestion is likely pretty screwed up.
If you spent time in the yo-yo dieting world, you were told to avoid fat in order to cut back on calories. This is because fat contains the highest amount of calories.
When you start keto, you do your best to swap out the carbs you lived on. Now you aim to eat foods filled with healthy fats and more protein. This swap often leads to strong cravings for the foods your body understands how to digest – simple carbs.
As a bonus, you may also deal with some pretty nasty side effects. These may include diarrhea, constipation, anxiety, depression, and more.
These strong cravings you experience are physiological. If you don’t take time to improve physiology and digestion, then cravings will keep happening. This means you’ll continue to struggle.
If you’re unsure of how to improve your digestion, you NEED to take the Digestion Course.
Crush Through Keto Cravings Tactic #2 – Eat Real Food
As you work toward improved digestion, another way to bust through cravings is to eat more real food.
I know what you’re thinking – um, I’m keto … of course, I eat real food. Real food is the base of a keto plan.
But are we all eating real food?
Because I see all of y’alls posts – and I’m not even southern – but this definitely deserves an “all y’alls.” I’m on social media way more than I prefer to be. I see all of the posts with delicious keto finds that boast of net carbs.
Does Rebel Ice Cream ring a bell for anyone?
I don’t mean to call just one company out since there are plenty of them out there. Using Rebel Ice Cream as an example – I see people get so excited because the front of the carton says only 6 carbs! What is this deliciousness that only has 6 grams of carbs? Amazing!
Not so fast.
When you look at the label, there are really 12 total carbs. While 12 carbs can still be great for a low-carb plan, if you add up net carbs all day long with everything you eat, this can really start to add up. Especially when you eat too many prepackaged “keto-friendly” foods.
When your plan focuses on prepackaged foods instead of real foods like bacon, eggs, meats, and veggies, then all of the processed junk leads to more cravings. This leads to a vicious cycle of eating more net carbs. That’s an easy way to go over your total carb limit for the day.
I haven’t even gotten into how those artificial sweeteners will kick cravings into a higher gear.
So you can keep on struggling with cravings and a lack of results by keeping these foods in your plan daily. That’s totally your choice.
Your other option is to try what we teach in our Ready, Set, Keto! Method. Ditch packaged foods since sticking with real food is your friend. It’s a friend that will help you crush through cravings on keto.
Crush Through Cravings Tactic #3 – Ditch the Diet Drinks
A final way to crush through cravings on keto is to quit the diet drinks!
There is this substance humans survived on since the caveman days – and that’s called water. That’s what you’re meant to drink – water. That’s what your body needs – water.
So what’s the harm of adding artificial sweeteners or other chemicals like those found in diet soda?
While I don’t have time to get into all of the harm artificially sweetened drinks lead to, I can tell you – there’s a lot of harm. You’ll have more cravings, more hunger, and more insulin spikes. This means less progress all around for you.
This was one of the biggest discoveries for many challengers during our last Keto Challenge.
Some challengers were told by diet gurus or nutritionists to keep drinking diet soda. They were told that it helps with cravings and hunger. In reality, diet soda does the exact opposite.
Once challengers work on weaning themselves off of diet drinks, this makes it easier to stick to keto. Getting rid of diet drinks leads to fewer cravings and hunger for nearly all who remove it from their plan.
