Hey chocolate lovers, looking for a fix for your sweet tooth on keto without any added sugars?
Minty melt fat bombs are an easy way to sneak in dark chocolate, plus the healthy fats you need to thrive on a ketogenic diet. They’re so easy to make. Melt a high quality dark chocolate bar with coconut oil. Then, stir in mint and vanilla extracts for a sweet treat with less sugar.
Easy homemade fat bombs are healthier than other highly processed keto friendly products you can buy at the store.

Is Dark Chocolate Keto Friendly?
Yes, dark chocolate is perfectly keto legal. This is great news for those times you need a little chocolate in your day.
The bad news is most keto-friendly chocolate bars have upwards of 11g net carbs for just a few dark chocolate squares. Those net carbs add up quickly when your chocolate cravings kick into high gear.
What’s the Best Dark Chocolate for a Keto Diet?
Many keto dieters gravitate towards sugar free dark chocolate options like Lily’s sweets. Even though Lily’s doesn’t have much sugar, this sugar-free chocolate can leave you feeling gassy and bloated. This is due to the sugar alcohols found in many keto friendly dark chocolate brands.
Consuming bars low in grams of net carbs doesn’t mean too much when your body is a big old ball of stress. If you’re like a lot of keto dieters, your body will find it difficult to digest processed foods made from man-made food chemicals. Since overly processed chemicals aren’t real foods found in nature, your body doesn’t understand what to do with them. This stresses your body out and makes the digestion process harder than it needs to be.
Many of these sweeteners leave behind a bitter taste. The ones that don’t are highly palatable, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. Artificial sweeteners are hundreds of times sweeter than the small amount of sugar found in organic dark chocolate. This means you’re more likely to eat the entire bar.
Other Problems with Keto Sweetened Foods
The story doesn’t get any better for the sweetened keto friendly chocolate chips or other chocolate treat recipes found in your favorite keto community. Just because the net carb content is low, that doesn’t make it a good option for a keto meal plan.
We teach our students to avoid all too common keto weight loss stalls by counting total carbs. This is especially helpful when you include keto friendly processed foods in your diet. Not counting all of the carbs can really screw up your weight loss plan.
Just a quick keto math lesson for anyone who’s read this far:
Stress = Cortisol Spike
Cortisol Spike = Fat Storing Mode
Fat Storing Mode = you don’t lose weight, even when a product claims to have only 2g net carbs 🤯
Make sure to closely analyze keto friendly products that proudly display fewer carbs on the package. It’s true they are convenient when it comes to portion control. However, in my humble keto expert opinion, keto products filled with sugar alcohols aren’t the best options when it comes to weight loss on a low-carb diet. Be especially wary of any product that mentions net carbs on the label.
How to Have Keto Friendly Chocolate and Eat it Too!
So what’s an at-the-end-of-her-wits-I-just-want-some-freaking-chocolate keto dieter to do? Obviously milk chocolate bars aren’t the answer. Unsweetened chocolate – like the 95% and above versions, won’t cut it for most dieters who are conditioned to expect a dose of sweetness is everything you eat.
The best solution to help women stick to keto when chocolate cravings happen – use high quality dark chocolate keto bars. As an added bonus, you can melt dark chocolate down with a healthy fat like coconut oil to get a quick chocolate fix. This helps you eat your chocolate and burn fat too!
Healthy Fats Help You Burn Fat on Keto
This keto fat bomb pulls double duty. Many women need to eat more healthy fats to get the fat loss benefits everyone talks about on keto.
Most of the women who enter my quarterly Keto Challenge get in because they’ve hit a weight loss stall while following keto. The most common thing holding them back – they’re not eating enough fat. When you skimp on fat on a diet that’s meant to be high in fat, your body won’t feel safe enough to let go of stored fat.
That’s the best part of keto! You need plenty of foods with a high fat content in order to bring in enough nutritional fat. When you bring in enough healthy fats, then your body feels like it has the resources to burn through stored fat.
I understand this goes against almost everything you’ve been taught as far as weight loss goes. After all, we all know calories in vs. calories out is the only way to lose weight, right?
Yeah, not so much.
After watching hundreds of women go through the Keto Challenge, and watching those hundreds of women eating more food to bust through keto weight loss plateaus, I’m a true believer.
So you can continue to listen to those who follow a starvation form of a keto diet … or you can eat delicious keto fat bombs and lose weight. Completely your choice.
Choosing Keto Friendly Dark Chocolate
I use 90% Lindt chocolate in keto fat bomb recipes. I’ve read that European chocolatiers have less mold found in their popular chocolate brand. I happen to be sensitive to mold, so this works best in my low carb recipes. If you’re not as sensitive to mold, there are better options than many of the keto chocolate versions that land at the top of a Google search.
Always choose versions that are 85% dark or above. If this is too bitter at first, eat it anyway. Eventually your taste buds will adjust. (As long as you don’t continue to overuse other keto sweeteners, like stevia or Swerve).
When you’re in the mood for a different flavor, you can switch fat bomb recipes up to another dark chocolate favorite. Endangered Species is a great keto friendly dark chocolate. This brand is a fair trade company that uses organic chocolate. If you’ve ever taken an in depth look at how cocoa products are sourced, you know it’s worth the extra time to seek out brands who go the extra mile to provide high quality chocolate with fair working conditions. Since organic chocolate contains less toxins, it’s your best bet when it comes to the best low carb chocolate bars.
Reasons I Prefer Dark Chocolate to Cocoa Powder
When I first began a keto diet, I used cocoa powder in fat bomb recipes. While cocoa powder has great health benefits, it’s not very sweet. When you use cocoa powder in a recipe, you will probably have to add stevia or another keto sweetener. Once I quit keto sweeteners for good, I used dark chocolate bars with low sugar content instead.
Just a quick note – yes, many of these bars contain a little bit of sugar. This will add a few grams of carbs to this healthy low-carb dessert recipe. While it may be your instinct to avoid sugar at all costs on keto, I truly believe your body understands how to process small amounts of real sugar better than man-made sweeteners.
Even though keto friendly sweeteners are popular in the keto community, that doesn’t mean you will lose weight with these sweeteners just because your friend did. This is the big reason dark chocolate makes a great ingredient when it comes to adding more fat into a keto diet. That, along with all of the added health benefits of dark chocolate.
How to Make Minty Melts
Now that we’ve talked about why high quality dark chocolate bars are the perfect choice for easy keto fat bomb recipes, let’s talk about how to make one of my favorite recipes. This recipe helped me lose more than 100 pounds with a keto lifestyle, so it’s a favorite for good reason!
Once melted together, set the chocolate mixture aside. Allow it to cool before adding the vanilla extract and peppermint oil. If you wait a few minutes, you’ll hear a sizzle which can also burn the chocolate.
After you combine the ingredients, give the chocolate mixture a taste test. If you detect bitter notes in the batter, add your favorite keto sweetener like Stevia or monk fruit. The important thing here is to add sweetener slowly. You can always add more if necessary, but you can’t take it out when you add too much.
If you’re unsure about which sweeteners to use in your favorite keto dessert recipes, get this free sweetener guide. You’ll learn which are the best keto sweeteners to use and how to convert them for different recipes.
Once you reach the perfect sweetness, add the chocolate mixture to a mini muffin pan in 1 tablespoon increments. Place in the freezer until firm. This usually takes 20-30 minutes.
You should be able to pop these keto treats out with a butter knife. If they don’t pop out easily, place them back in the freezer to firm up a little more.
Store in a Ziploc bag or airtight container in the freezer or fridge.
The Dark Chocolate Keto Friendly Fat Bomb Wrap Up
