If you suddenly force the amount of protein and fat a keto diet requires without supplementing with the right enzymes, you’ll experience all of the digestive symptoms that come along with this.
These symptoms may include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, anxiety, depression, bloating, heartburn, and more. Not only will keto life be miserable for you, but you also won’t lose weight on a keto diet.

Losing weight with keto is simple. Start by counting the grams of carbs each meal has. Next, eat enough fat and protein to feel good, but never stuffed. Use a food journal to keep track of carbs. And I do mean total carbs, not net.
After getting started with this same easy plan, poof! I was down 100 pounds before I knew it.
So perhaps it took a little more work to lose the weight. Still, keeping keto simple with easy recipes like this quick keto pasta sauce is what kept me on track. That plus improved digestion. Having digestion that functions well is so important to process all of the fat and protein you need to thrive on a real food keto diet.
How to Make Sweet & Spicy Spaghetti Sauce
Let’s ditch the weight loss tangents and get back to keto meat sauce.
Start by browning the ground beef in a large skillet. While browning the beef, season with your favorite Italian seasonings. I use plenty of Italian seasoning mix and oregano. A dash of red pepper flakes adds a kick to this recipe, but you can skip it if you don’t like a little heat.
After seasoning the meat, stir in chopped bell pepper, chopped onions, and minced garlic. If you have other veggies you love, like zucchini, add those to the sauce too. The more nutrient-dense veggies you add to a keto diet, the better!
Once the beef is browned, drain the excess grease. Turn the heat to medium-low and add the butter. As the butter melts into the meat, pour in the marinara sauce and stir.
Heat the sauce for a few minutes. Then sprinkle cinnamon on top to give this sauce a sweet flavor. Once it’s all stirred together, remove from heat before stirring in the olive oil. This is important since olive oil has a low smoke point. Using olive oil at a high temp can make it toxic.
Stir well with a large spoon and serve in a bowl. You can pour the sauce over the keto-friendly noodles mentioned above, or just eat with a spoon.
Tips to Make Keto Cooking Simple
- You can start this recipe with a smooth sauce, but if keto marinara sauces are your preference (ie, sans the meat), that doesn’t work as well. Getting enough protein is important on keto. You also need plenty of fat to stay satiated with a keto meal plan.
- Make this your own sauce by replacing ground beef with Italian sausage or ground pork instead.
- Use a low carb tomato sauce without added sugar. Check the nutrition label for ingredients. Verify your choice with the total carb count. Any red sauce that’s below 8 grams of carbs per serving should work.
- Cinnamon adds a little sweetness to the sauce, but it isn’t necessary. If a family member doesn’t like cinnamon, you can sprinkle it only over your serving of spaghetti sauce.
- I add a little olive oil for flavor, but it’s not necessary. If you like this flavor, turn the heat down before adding since olive oil turns rancid at high cooking temperatures.
