Your whole family will love this low carb spaghetti sauce made with ground beef and low carb vegetables. This is an easy original recipe you can use to transition to a low carb lifestyle.
How to Turn Spaghetti Sauce into a Keto Meal
Before losing 100 pounds on a keto diet, I made this same homemade spaghetti sauce recipe for dinner. At the time I used regular pasta from the grocery store and chose any chunky sauce that looked good.
To turn this into a great recipe for keto, choose the best sauce with reduced grams of sugar, like Rao’s pasta sauces. Then toss in extras like plenty of fresh garlic, diced onion, and bell pepper. If you like things spicy, zhush up this low carb pasta sauce up with black pepper, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, and maybe even a dash of onion powder.
Let’s talk about how to make this amazing recipe, along with tips on how to easily go from a standard American diet to keto. How to Transition from High Carb to Low Carb
When reducing carbs in your diet, you can keep a low carb marinara sauce with spaghetti dinner simple. If you still eat all of the carbs with meals, start reducing the amount of pasta you use each week. While some suggest you go cold turkey into ketogenic macros, that’s not great advice if your physiology isn’t set up for that.
I personally tried all-or-nothing diets for more than 20 years. I failed every single one. When I allowed myself time to come off of the carbs my body relied on slowly, I finally stuck to a low carb diet long term. This helped me get real results instead of falling into another yo-yo diet pattern.
Let’s use this spaghetti sauce meal as an example of how to slowly reduce carbs. If you’re still adjusting to low carb macros, you can measure out half of a serving of noodles. Top the noodles with enough meat sauce to feel satisfied, but not stuffed.
Next time you make low carb meat sauce, reduce the amount of noodles you use to a quarter of a serving. The more you reduce carbs while raising fat and protein in each meal, the easier a low carb lifestyle becomes.
You can follow this simple low carb transition if the thought of ditching all carbs all at once seems too hard.
Before You Move onto Keto
I wanted to take a quick detour to mention the biggest thing that helped me easily transition from a low carb plan to a full keto lifestyle. As you’ll read about in most of my blogs, improving digestion is one of the best things you can do to find long term success with a keto diet.
This is especially true if you followed a low calorie diet for any length of time. When you follow low calorie plans, you probably ate a lot of carbs. If you try to make an overnight switch to keto without improving digestion, this can be disastrous.
When you eat less fat and protein with a low calorie plan, your body makes less of the enzymes to process these effectively. If you suddenly force the amount of protein and fat a keto diet requires without supplementing with the right enzymes, you’ll experience all of the digestive symptoms that come along with this.
These symptoms may include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, anxiety, depression, bloating, heartburn and more. Not only will keto life be miserable for you, but you also won’t lose weight on a keto diet.

Transition from Low Carb to Keto
If you already follow a keto lifestyle, don’t revert back to adding more carbs. If you’re like me and swapping all of your favorite carbs for all keto friendly substitutes is too difficult at first, make a slower transition. You can still lose weight following a low carb plan. Taking the slow and steady approach will help prime your body for a smoother keto transition.
Once you’re ready to take this meal to the next level, drop the high carb pasta noodles all together. This is one of the easiest meals you can use to make an easy keto transition.
Make this low carb sauce more keto friendly by using zucchini noodles, shirataki noodles, or noodles made from spaghetti squash. You can even skip noodles all together. Keep this keto meal simply by scooping the sauce into a bowl. Eat it with a spoon just like a chili.
Use A Low Carb Spaghetti Sauce
Keto chefs get all fancy pants with a homemade sauce. They instruct you to add whole tomatoes to an immersion blender, and then blend them into a tomato paste. While a homemade keto spaghetti sauce sounds amazing, who’s got the time?
Wait, is that even how you make a homemade keto marinara sauce? Because I clearly have no clue 😂
That’s why my lazy keto recipes work. You don’t have to put in so much work to make a perfect keto tomato sauce in order to lose weight with keto. Keep your low-carb diet simple so you actually stick with it.
Losing weight with keto is simple. Start by counting the grams of carbs each meal has. Next, eat enough fat and protein to feel good, but never stuffed. Use a food journal to keep track of carbs. And I do mean total carbs, not net.
After getting started with this same easy plan, poof! I was down 100 pounds before I knew it.
So perhaps it took a little more work to lose the weight. Still, keeping keto simple with easy recipes like this quick keto pasta sauce is what kept me on track. That plus improved digestion. Having digestion that functions well is so important to process all of the fat and protein you need to thrive on a real food keto diet.
How to Make Sweet & Spicy Spaghetti Sauce
Let’s ditch the weight loss tangents and get back to keto meat sauce.
Start by browning the ground beef in a large skillet. While browning the beef, season with your favorite Italian seasonings. I use plenty of Italian seasoning mix and oregano. A dash of red pepper flakes adds a kick to this recipe, but you can skip it if you don’t like a little heat.
After seasoning the meat, stir in chopped bell pepper, chopped onions, and minced garlic. If you have other veggies you love, like zucchini, add those to the sauce too. The more nutrient dense veggies you add to a keto diet, the better!
Once the beef is browned, drain the excess grease. Turn the heat to medium-low and add the butter. As the butter melts into the meat, pour in the marinara sauce and stir.
Heat the sauce for a few minutes. Then sprinkle cinnamon on top to give this sauce a sweet flavor. Once it’s all stirred together, remove from heat before stirring in the olive oil. This is important since olive oil has a low smoke point. Using olive oil at a high temp can make it toxic.
Stir well with a large spoon and serve in a bowl. You can pour the sauce over the keto friendly noodles mentioned above, or just eat with a spoon.
Tips to Make Keto Cooking Simple
- You can start this recipe with a smooth sauce, but if keto marinara sauces are your preference (ie, sans the meat), that doesn’t work as well. Getting enough protein is important on keto. You also need plenty of fat to stay satiated with a keto meal plan.
- Make this your own sauce by replacing ground beef with Italian sausage or ground pork instead.
- Use a low carb tomato sauce without added sugar. Check the nutrition label for ingredients. Verify your choice with the total carb count. Any red sauce that’s below 8 grams of carbs per serving should work.
- Cinnamon adds a little sweetness to the sauce, but it isn’t necessary. If a family member doesn’t like cinnamon, you can sprinkle it only over your serving of spaghetti sauce.
- I add a little olive oil for flavor, but it’s not necessary. If you like this flavor, turn the heat down before adding since olive oil turns rancid at high cooking temperatures.
- Make a double batch and store leftovers in an airtight container. This recipe makes an easy keto lunch idea later in the week. Reheat it over medium heat on the stovetop since the microwave kills the flavor and the nutrition!
- Remove the beef from this recipe to turn this into a dipping sauce or low carb pizza sauce. Try this sausage crust keto pizza recipe if you need any ideas. Or, leave it in to use with your favorite low carb lasagna recipe.
- Top with parmesan cheese if you love it. Leave it off if dairy stalls your keto results.
